Time to tell Hasbro where to get stuffed and go to another game system like GURPS.

I had my run-in with their Lawyers and Licensing department back in the early 2000s with Star Frontiers.

They called me (physically) and we had a discussion and all that. They made promises, and all that. And today, I can't get anyone from WotC nor Hasbro to respond, so I brought all my .pdfs back online for the fans.

They kept talking about the 'trademark' they 'owned' since they had purchased all the IP from TSR. I had to correct them and tell them that the original TM expired since TSR had never 'reup'd' it legally. Years later a few members of the original TSR tried again and started all the legal battles. I took the .pdfs offline hoping someone would return my contacts.

I gave up on D&D when it went to d20 .. I still design stuff and all that, but don't play it.

Time to tell Hasbro where to get stuffed and go to another game system like GURPS.

    Huh.

I just bought 5e (2024) books, and have been looking at the System Reference Document to figure out what I can use under some open license (in this case, CC-BY-4.0).

Since my use case is a game idea. And I'd love to use as much D&D stuff as possible in general, but I'm going to avoid touching stuff that I have to worry about licensing.

Anyway, have watched the video, the tl;dw is "there was view buying on YouTube" and they delayed a D&D show in the UK, probably because of low ticket sales. These may be an indication that D&D is in trouble.

Which... I guess I'm okay with, and probably don't care, one way or the other? I'm mostly worried about licensing, and want Hasbro to do the things that would expand usage.

But that expanded usage has to come with a system where I can build on it, or, yeah, gonna go elsewhere.

And seems like I'm not alone, where this is a market where Hasbro _needs_ all these people that it'd rather directly control and extract money from.

Hopefully Hasbro can get management that can figure out that D&D has to be treated differently, for a long time, to be a golden goose.

Instead, I'm afraid that they'll kill off D&D for being less profitable, as they slowly kill off their company by extracting too much from Magic: the Gathering, all to chase higher short-term profits.
